The difference between a cultured pearl and a natural pearl is one of origin, not authenticity. Natural pearls form spontaneously when a foreign particle enters a mollusc in the wild — an event so rare today that natural pearls are almost exclusively found in antique jewellery or museum collections. Cultured pearls replicate this process intentionally: a pearl farmer introduces a small piece of tissue into a freshwater mussel, which then produces layers of lustrous nacre around it. The pearl is real. The process is simply guided.
Freshwater cultured pearls are formed inside freshwater mussels — primarily in the lakes and rivers of China, which has perfected this craft over decades. 1) Tissue Nucleation
Unlike saltwater pearls — which are typically nucleated with a round bead — freshwater pearls begin with a small piece of mantle tissue from a donor mussel. 2) Cultivation in Freshwater
The mussels are returned to their freshwater environment — carefully managed lakes and rivers — where they are tended for anywhere from one to three years, or longer for larger, finer pearls. Farmers monitor water quality, temperature, and the health of each mussel throughout this period.
3) Layer by Layer: The Nacre Forms
The mussel responds to the implanted tissue by secreting nacre — the crystalline substance that gives pearls their distinctive glow. Layer upon microscopic layer builds over months and years. This is where the magic resides: the longer the growth period, the thicker the nacre, and the deeper the lustre.
4) Harvest and Selection
When the time is right, the pearls are harvested by hand. From a single harvest, only a fraction will meet the standards demanded by fine jewellery. The rest are sorted, graded, and directed to different tiers of production. A truly fine freshwater pearl is genuinely rare.
Because freshwater pearls are tissue-nucleated rather than bead-nucleated, the pearl that forms is composed almost entirely of solid nacre — not a thin coating over a bead. This is a significant structural advantage that makes freshwater pearls exceptionally durable and deeply lustrous.

How to Care for
Freshwater Pearls
Pearls are organic gems and benefit from thoughtful care. With the right habits, your freshwater pearl jewellery will retain its lustre and beauty for generations.

Apply perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics before putting on your pearls. Chemicals and alcohol are the primary enemies of nacre.
